About Lectern

Software for schools, made with patience

Lectern is a small team building school management software that respects the long rhythm of a school year - and the people who carry it.

How it started

From a kitchen table in Cape Town

Lectern began in 2025, after our founder spent a term volunteering as treasurer for a small primary school. Spreadsheets had taken over Sunday afternoons. Term reports lived in WhatsApp threads. Bursaries lived in a notebook.

We started by asking what a school actually needs. Not what a SaaS company can sell - what a bursar can use on a Monday morning, what a teacher can fill in between lessons, what a parent can read on the bus.

Lectern is the answer we’ve been building since.

What we believe

Four principles, kept honestly

01

Calm by design

Software shouldn't be louder than the lesson. We hide complexity behind one quiet interface, never four.

02

Plain pricing

No asterisks. No surprise tiers. The price you see is the price you pay - monthly or yearly.

03

Long memory

Your data is yours. Audit trails are mandatory. Term reports from 2030 should be readable in 2050.

04

School time, not startup time

We ship when it's right, not when it's loud. A term is twelve weeks. We plan in terms.

Who builds Lectern

A small team, on purpose

We hire slowly, write code carefully, and answer the email ourselves. Lectern stays small so we can stay close to the schools we serve.

See roles

We make software for schools because schools made us - every teacher who stayed late, every bursar who balanced the books, every parent who turned up to a recital.
